I tend to begin with a theme, such as classic white, rustic natural or vivid multicolor and continue it in every space. E.g. a white outside with white fairy lights inside and white roofline lights. It is all tied up with the addition of complementary decor such as wreaths on the windows and garlands on mantels.
One year I put some little touches of lighting in all rooms, hallways, bathrooms, bedrooms, the effect was magical. There were glimpses of glitter everywhere in the house and the holiday was immersive.
Had I been continuing this list I would have recommended attention to flow. Ensure the exterior exterior to interior flow is natural in order to have guests flow through the home at an even flow of light.
